ABSTRACT

IntroductionThe development of high-quality physical education curriculums is required in the information age. Interdisciplinary literacy and student learning behavior are two significant factors that affect the quality of teaching and learning. This study explores the relationship between interdisciplinary literacy (IDL) and learning effects (LE) among Chinese college students during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the mediating effects of online physical education learning behaviors (OPELB). This research aims to provide a reference for the development of high-quality online physical education. MethodsThe study involved 691 college students from 10 general universities in Shaanxi Province as research subjects. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis and Bootstrap testing were used to evaluate the mediating effects. ResultsThere was a significant positive relationship between the three variables of IDL, OPELB, and LE (p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis found that IDL significantly and positively predicted LE and OPELB (p < 0.001), and OPELB predicted LE (p < 0.001). IDL among college students had a total effect of 0.816 on LE, with OPELB accounting for 22.67% of the mediated effect. DiscussionThis study demonstrates that OPELB has a partial mediating effect on IL and LE, and stable IDL and OPELB improve LE. Therefore, teachers should pay attention to improving students' IDL while encouraging them to develop better OPELB to achieve satisfactory learning outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Teaching physical education during the COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges, putting a spotlight on problematic school structures and teacher beliefs that influence teacher effectiveness and well-being. The purpose of this study was to capture physical education teachers' (N = 10) experiences during the pandemic to understand perceptions of support, teaching beliefs, and emotions/reactions to the new environment. Short-term longitudinal qualitative analysis was used to collect pre/post semester interviews and critical incidence forms throughout the semester. Resulting themes included: (a) superficial versus tangible support, (b) planning for curricular changes, (c) student--teacher connections, and (d) emotional labor and uncertainty. Results provide insight about thriving versus surviving as learned from teaching during a pandemic. Teachers who displayed positive emotions, sought student connections, and exhibited stronger core beliefs, resilience, and flexibility within instructional decisions perceived more effectiveness and well-being. Findings support investigating holes in teacher belief systems and the interconnectedness between emotions and teacher effectiveness and well-being.

ABSTRACT

Purpose The many obstacles and difficulties to carry out research in the field of physical education are the gaps and urgency in this research. This study aims to investigate perceptions from lecturers regarding the conveniences and difficulties when carrying out research in physical education during COVID-19. Material and Methods This study uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods through online-based in-depth interviews. Five lecturers from two universities in Indonesia and one lecturers from universities in Hungary were willing to participate in this research. The way to select them was by sending an email to their respective universities and only 10 people participated in this study. However, 4 people did not qualify because they did not have 10 years of research experience. All participants signed a consent letter to participate in this study. The interview started with explanation from participants regarding their research experiences, the conveniences and the difficulties faced when carrying out research during pandemic. After the activity was completed, the results of the interviews were collected and then a qualitative statistical analysis was carried out In this study, statistical analysis used thematic method in the form of interviews transcribed word for word.The transcripts were read repeatedly by researchers and three experts, coding and a collection of phrases were arranged into themes. Results The findings of this study indicate that there were several conveniences in carrying out research physical education during the COVID-19 period, including the implementation can be done anywhere and anytime, cost-effective and saving time, data collection is easier and faster. Meanwhile, the difficulties were in obtaining research subjects, subjects who have inadequate technological literacy, poor internet network and inaccurate data. Conclusions Thus, the conveniences and difficulties of carrying out research were important and must be continuously evaluated, in order to ensure the study able to conduct optimally even during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. © Samsudin, Setiawan E, Abdul Gani R, Winarno ME, Anggara Suganda M, Kardiyanto DW, Nemeth Z., 2023.

ABSTRACT

Social media has become an essential tool in social networking and content sharing. Our professional and personal lives have become inundated with social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Educators are using these platforms increasingly as a way to remain current with developments in their respective fields. Social media can also support teachers in gaining knowledge, and receiving feedback and building relationships with educators around the world. Despite the prevalence of use within physical education, little research exists to understand how social media might enhance the work of physical educators. Given that physical educators experience marginality in their working environments, we propose that social media may provide a tool that can assist PE teachers in overcoming marginality and potentially increase their levels of perceived mattering. The purpose of this article is to discuss how physical educators can use social media to navigate marginality and increase perceptions of mattering.

ABSTRACT

Physical education is seen as an essential subject for the development of healthy habits and well-being, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3. Furthermore, the impact of technology on all aspects of life is now an undeniable reality. The field of education is no exception, and digitalisation has undoubtedly been accelerated by the emergency situation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper aims to analyse the scientific production related to the field of physical education, technology, and the pandemic from a double perspective. From a search in Scopus, 86 articles were selected for analysis. A bibliometric approach was used to identify the variables of impact, collaboration, production, and dissemination. While the content analysis allowed us to delve deeper into the topics most frequently chosen by researchers, we found that the articles focused both on the circumstances experienced by practising teachers and on the adaptations made in the teaching/learning process with trainee teachers and students at different stages of education. Thus, technology has emerged as a fundamental tool in physical education during the pandemic, making it possible to develop or maintain better health and learning.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To identify motivational determinants explaining Physical Education teachers' behaviors promoting students' physical activity (PA) amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Nine hundred thirty-one Italian and French teachers completed a questionnaire assessing motivational determinants (self-determined motivation, self-efficacy, perceived ease and usefulness toward digital technologies, engagement at work), their intention and behaviors promoting PA, in reference to before and during the pandemic. Path analyses tested the associations of changes in motivational determinants with changes in intention and behaviors. Results: Increases in autonomous, controlled motivation, self-efficacy, and perceived usefulness toward digital technologies, and a decrease in amotivation were associated with an increase in the intention to promote PA. In turn, an increase in intention, but also in self-efficacy, autonomous motivation, and perceived usefulness toward digital technologies were paired with an increase in behaviors promoting PA. Conclusion: Implications regarding the commitment of Physical Education teachers to challenging pedagogical situations, such as promoting PA amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to profound changes at various levels of society, and sports is not immune to this. It is very important to study and identify the consequences of COVID-19 in different parts of the sports in Iran. The aim of the present study was to identify the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on Iranian student sports with emphasis on beneficiaries. Methods: This qualitative study was an exploratory research and in terms of purpose was considered as applied research. The statistical population of the study included sports teachers, professors of Farhangian University, managers of the General Office of Physical Education and sports experts of the Ministry of Education which were selected through purposive sampling method. In-depth and semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants to collect information and theoretical saturation was obtained with 17 interviews. To analyze the data, the thematic analysis method was used. Findings: The consequences of COVID-19 pandemic on physical education and sports education consist of four main concepts which include "creating a passive lifestyle, behavioral and social harms, technological-digital development, and family sports”. Conclusion: Considering the results and effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to develop appropriate programs to use the opportunities and manage the challenges of the post-COVID-19 era in the field of physical education and sports education for students in Iran. © 2022, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS). ABSTRACT

This research, which was performed in order to determine the relationship between some activities in the online learning environment and their academic achievements of Physical Education and Sports School students, was designed in a relational scanning model. The research was conducted on the data of 444 students who attended online classes at a physical education and sports school of a state university in the spring term of the 2020-2021 academic year. Data used in the research were collected through "Aid for Learning Management System (ALMS)" and "Student Information System (SIS)" of the relevant university. The duration of watching the courses live and from the archive, the number of downloading the course documents and the duration of watching the course videos uploaded were obtained within the scope of online learning activities via ALMS;and the academic achievement scores of the students for these courses were obtained via SIS. As a result of the research, a positive and significant relationship was found between course attendance, the duration of watching the archived and uploaded course videos, the number of downloading course documents and students' gender and their academic achievement scores while there was no significant relationship between students' grade level and academic achievement scores. According to the significant correlations, it was seen that the duration of live course attendance and watching from the archive significantly predicted the academic achievement scores of the students while the duration of watching the course videos, the number of downloading the course documents and gender did not significantly predict the academic achievement scores of the students.

ABSTRACT

During the last years, physical activity and physical education classes in all age groups have been affected by the Sars-Cov-2 pandemic. The objective of this research was to reveal the perceptions about the effect that physical activity produces during COVID-19 according to the discourse of students of the Physical Education Pedagogy career of the Autonomous University of Chile, Temuco campus. The method was qualitative with a case study design, where the participants were 21 Physical Education Pedagogy students. The information collection instrument was the semi-structured interview and the grounded theory was used for its analysis. It is concluded that COVID 19 increased a very high level of physical inactivity in people, which translates into a decrease in energy expenditure, a high level of stress, anxiety, which were caused by the isolation that occurred at some point. © Copyright: Federación Española de Asociaciones de Docentes de Educación Física (FEADEF).

ABSTRACT

Since the global COVID-19 outbreak in the spring of 2020, online instruction has replaced traditional classroom instruction as the main method of educating students. Teaching physical education online can be challenging, as it may be difficult to teach students certain movements, accurate student mobility, and appropriate exercise assignments. This paper proposed an online teaching support system with sustainable development features that utilize several large data sets. The system is based on the deep learning image recognition algorithm ResNet34, which can analyze and correct student actions in real-time for gymnastics, dance, basketball, and other sports. By combining the attention mechanism module with the original ResNet34, the detection precision of the system can be enhanced. The sustainability of the system is evident from the fact that the data set can be expanded in response to the emergence of new sports categories and can be kept current in real-time. According to experiments, the target identification accuracy of the proposed system, which combines ResNet34 and the attention mechanism, is higher than that of several other methods currently in use. The proposed techniques outperform the original ResNet34 in terms of accuracy, precision, and recall by 4.1%, 2.8%, and 3.6%, respectively. The suggested approach significantly improves student action correction in virtual sports instruction.

ABSTRACT

Before COVID-19, perceived freedom in leisure (PFL) was rarely considered based on academic majors. This study examined student PFL during COVID-19 lockdowns. 340 Iranian students studying physical education, non-physical education, and medical sciences took an online Witt and Ellis (1985) scale survey in July and August 2021. The one-sample t-test showed that students' PFL (M = 3.78) exceeded the hypothesized value (test value = 3). ANOVA showed a significant difference in PFL means between the three groups (F = 7.530, P < 0.01). Medical sciences students had the lowest PFL (3.45), and physical education students had the highest (3.86). Iranian students' high PFL likely indicates they don't have lessons or schoolwork, giving them a sense of freedom even during pandemics.

ABSTRACT

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the state of alarm and home confinement, teaching became virtual in a matter of a few days and teachers had to adapt all their work inexorably. Faced with this totally unprecedented situation in the history of our educational system, this research has been used to investigate and describe the impact of the period of confinement on the school curriculum of physical education in primary and compulsory secondary education. The instrument used was a questionnaire made in Google Forms using the Delphi technique. The sample consisted of 100 teachers of the Primary Education (PE) and Secondary Education (SE) stages in Spain, specifically in the autonomous community of Andalusia. Among the main conclusions we highlight that the teachers considered that the objectives of health and physical condition were the most worked objectives in the area. The teachers consider that they did not manage to carry out the established motor times, nor the programming, but they did get the students to carry out a weekly task with an involvement of approximately one hour. It was concluded that the impact on learning was great because not all the contents were worked on and the tasks set were not evaluable.

In the age of COVID-19, online physical education (OLPE) has emerged as a major part of the day-to-day professional practice of P-12 physical education teachers and physical education teacher education (PETE) faculty. Yet little is known about what would optimize an OLPE resource from the perspective of physical educators. This study addressed this knowledge gap. A convenience sample of P-12 physical education teachers (n = 9) and PETE faculty (n = 10) was recruited to participate in six focus groups. Data were qualitatively analyzed with both deductive techniques and inductive techniques and themes across both participant groups (physical education teachers and PETE faculty) and by group were identified. Across-group themes included generally negative views of OLPE, concerns of equity and context, thoughts on assessment, and design ideas for virtual resources. Within groups, P-12 physical educators shared concerns about grading and providing meaningful feedback, whereas PETE faculty focused on ensuring that OLPE was designed and delivered considering best practices. This study builds on a nascent line of inquiry that informs the development of an OLPE resource to meets physical educators' professional needs during the pandemic and into an inevitable future where virtual teaching and learning are status quo. ABSTRACT

Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) acquired a great deal of importance within the educational system in general and the PE area in particular. The aim of this study was to analyze: (1) the computer applications most used by PE teachers;(2) the variables that influenced their greater or lesser use;and (3) the number of students who connected before and after Easter and the effect of the digital divide. Quantitative descriptive and exploratory design. An on-line ad hoc questionnaire was designed and administered to a sample of 526 PE teachers and different statistical analyses were carried out. The results show that teachers used a wide variety of computer applications in this situation, with a greater use made of the institutional e-mail, cloud storage and word processors, as well as the Office 365 toolkit. The influence of different variables in the use of ICT was analyzed, finding few significant differences, except in the evaluation. Finally, it was found that the number of connected students increased significantly after the Easter holidays, and that there is a digital divide, with increasing connectivity depending on the socio-cultural level of the families. It is concluded that the COVID-19 confinement has powerfully affected the use of ICT by PE teachers and that it would be interesting to carry out more research on its effects in the following courses and in teacher education. © 2023, Universidad Compultense Madrid. ABSTRACT

Despite their effectiveness in minimizing the spread of infection, movement restrictions adopted during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have not been without their health-related consequences, including decreases in physical activity and increases in sedentary behavior. This study aimed to investigate differences in stress and sense of community among Korean citizens in various age groups according to the degree of their participation in physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyzed data collected during the Social Survey of Busan Metropolitan City 2020, the population of which included all household members over the age of 15. Data for a total of 33,082 participants (male = 15,129;female = 17,953) were extracted using a two-stage cluster sampling method. Age, stress level, and sense of community were analyzed using independent t-tests, while the frequency of participation in physical activity was analyzed using a Mann-Whitney U test. Differences in stress level and community consciousness according to the frequency of physical activity were examined via multivariate analysis of variance. Variables exhibiting significant differences were evaluated for differences between groups through Scheffe's post hoc analysis. First, stress levels were higher among female adolescents than male adolescents. Among adults and older adults, men exhibited higher overall stress levels than women, whereas sense of community was stronger in women than men. Second, male adolescents in the regular physical activity participation group showed lower levels in some factors of stress than those in the nonparticipating group. Finally, a higher frequency of participation in physical activity among adults and older adults was associated with lower stress and higher sense of community, regardless of gender. In conclusion, regular participation in physical activity should be considered when designing strategies for managing stress and promoting social relationships at the national and individual levels during COVID-19 and any similar pandemics in the future.Copyright ©2023 The Author(s). ABSTRACT

Background and Study Aim Material and Methods College students' activity levels are considerably affected by mobile gaming, according to multiple studies. There have, however, been no studies done to date comparing gamers and non-gamers in terms of their levels of endurance. This present study employed beep and 3-minute step tests to compare mobile gamers' and non-gamers endurance levels. In addition, the difference between demographic variables such as age, gender, and BMI and participants' aerobic capacity is a major area of study. Students at the City College of Angeles in the Philippines were selected using the Judgement Sampling Technique to take part in the research. Students who participated in the study are enrolled in the 1st Semester of the Academic year 2022-2023. A survey questionnaire consisting of four sections were utilized to obtain information from the respondents. Age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and an endurance test are all part of the personal profile. Both the beep test and the 3-minute step test were administered to the participants. Results from the participants' personal profiles, BMIs, and endurance tests were summarized using descriptive statistics like frequency (f) and percentage (%). The Paired T-Test was also used to find out if there was a significant difference in the participants' endurance between mobile gamers and non-gamers. Finally, the individuals' age, gender, and Body Mass Index (BMI) were validated with their endurance levels by performing Independent Samples T-Test and One-way ANOVA. Results Beep and 3-minute step tests showed that gamers and non-gamers have very different levels of endurance, with the latter group displaying much more stamina than the former. It was also shown that among the three factors studied, gender was the only one with a relationship to endurance. Conclusions The study did not take into account factors like health history including nutrition, diet, sleep pattern, lifestyle, health issues, and endurance level on other types of measures. Conducting an inquiry similar to the one that was done, but also taking into account the other variables indicated, is a highly suggested course. Several findings are established, and numerous suggestions for further research, as well as policy and educational applications, are provided.

ABSTRACT

On March 14, 2020, a State of Alarm was declared throughout Spain, and the educational system underwent a change that led to the reformulation of many aspects of the teaching-learning process. In Spain, the Autonomous Communities (AACC) assumed the delegation of responsibilities to act in their territorial scope and adapt the restrictions by territorial areas according to the incidence of Covid-19 infections. Subsequently, many studies supported the decision of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training for the academic year 2020-2021, on the need for the attendance of educational classes, entrusting each AACC and educational center to specify contingency plans or safety protocols, with the aim of ensuring the maximum possible attendance of students in Secondary Education. The aim of this work is to describe and learn about the difficulties encountered by Physical Education (PE) teachers when teaching during the 2020-2021 school year, in relation to four dimensions: time for physical-sports practice, use of facilities, use and cleaning of material, and decisions of the management team regarding the subject of PE. An ad hoc survey was designed, with the participation of a total of 740 PE teachers in Spain, distributed among the 17 AACC. The results show a decrease in motor engagement time, difficulties in working on some objectives and evaluation criteria due to the impossibility of using specific materials or classrooms, because of a disparity of criteria and approaches used by the different AACC.

ABSTRACT

The article reflects theoretical, methodological and methodical bases of psychological aid to victims of unexpected crisis-military situations on the background of coronovirus pandemics spreading. The essence of psychological self-help as a factor of stress-resistance and internal psychological potential of resisting psychological traumas in the conditions of war and viral pandemics with the propositions of effective methodological means of its conducting is revealed. In providing psychological aid, the cognitive-behavioral approach was deemed effective as the basic one, and it was suggested that integrative psychotherapeutic and comprehensive psychological approaches to crisis counseling in conditions of military conflict be applied, depending on the specifics of survivors' experience of acute emotional reactions and the complexity of the course of posttraumatic stress disorders of resistance to the action of a psychotraumatic factor. Neuropsychological correction deserves special attention in providing psychological aid in conditions of military conflict and pandemics, which allows a combination of an integrated bodyoriented psychological approach with neuro-psycho-correctional techniques and psychotherapeutic methods for effective restoration of the tone of the nervous system and stabilization of the psycho-emotional state. The main provisions of practical psychology that in conditions of war and pandemic COVID-19 the adaptive potential of psychological health of each person and psychological self-help is love, faith and hope. Psychological recommendations of educational character for the formation of basic skills to ensure psychological health in conditions of war and pandemic COVID-19 have been developed.

ABSTRACT

Exercise at home has already been a common behavior in the current world, especially in the post-COVID-19 era, even some athletes need to do physical fitness at home to keep their state due to the quarantine. So, the importance of online physical training and evaluation is highly increasing. In this work, we build an online 8-form Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) training and evaluation system, which provides a platform for coaches and users to conduct TCC training and evaluation online. Coaches formulate an evaluation rule and upload coaching videos to the platform, then users watch videos online and submit their own recordings, finally, users will get a score of their recordings. To complete this task, we propose a video capture method to record users' sports exercise videos from different perspectives, construct a 3D pose estimation model to identify human pose from captured video, and propose an evaluation model which can judge users' performance and assign a score to each video. To test our proposed models, we make a dataset consisting of key pose frames of TCC, and the key pose frames are extracted from users' TCC exercise videos. We use the dataset to train our models and assign scores to key poses, then compare the results with scores given by professional TCC players. In addition, we add all key pose scores from every single user together and obtain the whole score of an exercise video. The experiment results show that the error between scores assigned by our models and scores given by professional players does not exceed 1.6 in most scoring of a whole exercise video, and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) is about 0.75 in the scoring of each key pose. © 2022 IEEE.
